Planting Herbs in Pots For many years, the best way to have fresh herbs at home was to plant them in a pot on the windowsill. I grew up in a house with a pretty potted herb garden, and now that I am retired I have finally been able to move on to container gardening. Container herbs such as mint and basil smell great when they are planted in a sunny window box, but the smell of fresh herbs just does not come from a potted plant. For this reason, you will probably want to plant mint in an outdoor area, perhaps along the base of a tree in a pot.
How to Grow Herbs in Pots There are a number of ways to go about growing your mint plants. In the nursery where I grew up, they were actually put into a mason jar to keep the moisture level down, and a fun thing happened while I was growing mint. Whenever the jar was washed, the water would drip down onto the leaves of the mint plant, dampening them out. So, I learned early on not to over water mint plants, as this would result in wilting. I also learned to prune my mint plants often. As you can see, watering and pruning go hand in hand.
When planting your chocolate mint seeds, dig a hole about 2 inches deep, and then pour in the soil. Make sure the soil is really well rotted before you add your seeds. If the ground has already begun to dry out, wait for it to finish drying out before putting any more soil in. It may take a week or so for the ground to completely dry out, but after a few weeks it should expand nicely, and by that time your little plant should have expanded quite a bit.
When the chocolate mint begins to expand, it will begin to produce little green shoots. These are actually buds, and after the flower opens, they would be ready to start blooming. When you see little black or green flowers, this is when you know that the plant has finished blooming. When this happens, it is time to pull the plant from the ground. At this point you should have a beautiful small plant with lots of wonderful smelling buds.
When growing your chocolate mint plants, it is very important to keep an eye on them, so that you don’t over water them. Although, I have found that I do need to water my plants from time to time. If I did not water them, I would probably end up having to cut off some of the flowers. If you are going to be growing mint in pots, I would suggest growing them inside. This way they won’t get all the exposure to the sun and moisture that outdoor mints and other types of flowers would get.
