Garden flower pots have developed into an extremely popular hobby over the last two decades. Flower pot gardening is now an internationally accepted art form and many people now follow flower-pot gardening as a full-time career. The most common garden flower pots are the clay variety. The reason for this is that they’re highly versatile and can be made to suit almost any garden style.
A flower pot, generally, is a container where other organic plants and even flowers are grown and exhibited. Historically, and to an extent still to an extent to this day, they were typically made of plain terracotta in the classic round shape, usually without any glazing. Today, many new types of garden flower pots are manufactured from a wide range of materials including terracotta, metal, glass, natural stone, ceramic, wood and even paper. They can be made to suit almost any garden style, whether it’s formal contemporary, exotic, or even rustic.
You can buy flower pots from specialist garden centers or you can buy them in your local gardening shop. Alternatively, you can buy them on the internet. Online stores are by far the best as there is a much bigger choice available. On the other hand, garden centers can offer a larger selection but may not have any locally available stock. Some will sell garden flower pots which have been used previously and are now obsolete. Others may only stock the more popular pots and may not be able to order anything less.
Flower pots are available in various sizes and shapes. They can be shallow, deep, square, round, oval, rectangular, hexagonal, spherical, and even self-watering. Some pots are designed to withstand being planted in water, but they usually come with a removable lid or are otherwise self-contained. Garden flower pots can be designed to specific requirements, for example there are small shallow pots suitable for small containers such as seedlings or cuttings, whereas larger pots can be used for flowering plants. In fact some gardeners like to build a pot garden rather than buy a pot.
There is no real art to making flower pots, although there are several aspects that should be taken into account to achieve the best results. A depth of between four and six inches is usually the norm, although some pots can go up to nine or ten inches deep. The shape of the flower pots should be something that compliments the overall design of your garden. For example, if your garden has a lot of rocks then you would probably want to avoid square or round garden flower pots as these would detract from the look of the area.
Flower pots can also come in a variety of different materials. Metal flower pots tend to be the cheapest and therefore popular, but you must bear in mind that they do rust when left outdoors. Plastic pots are also reasonably cheap, but they do not last as long as metal pots and can easily be damaged by pests. Ceramic pots are the most expensive, but they will last longer and are typically weather resistant. Plastic garden pots are the cheapest but also the easiest to clean, but keep in mind that many gardeners find that they discolor after some time, especially if they have been placed in a sunny area of the garden.
Garden flower pots also need to have a protective, drainage base. Plastic pots can be purchased without a base and you can often get a plastic pot that has an attached stand. This means you do not have to purchase a stand and will save time having to move it around. Garden flower pots with a stand are a good choice if you want the pot to be decorative rather than functional. It is also advisable to get pots with some sort of locking mechanism as you do not want a pot falling over if you are unable to get it to stand on its own.
When choosing a garden pot, you need to choose one that is going to blend in with the rest of your garden. If you have a very modern garden, then a contemporary pot would suit it well. On the other hand, if you have a traditional garden, then perhaps a traditional pot would suit you best. In a very modern garden, you could probably go for either a white pot or a transparent one. Make sure you keep your garden design in mind when picking your pot, as you will want the pot to blend in with your garden.
