Growing microgreen vegetables is fast becoming the latest and most popular method of home vegetable gardening. With the availability of beautiful color varieties, many people are now opting to grow these small, purple gems in indoor containers and later, on a larger scale. But even if you choose this route, you still need to have some microgreen planting tips handy and, more importantly, find a reliable microgreen drop seeder. Many of these growing tips can be implemented individually, but knowing where to source your seeds from can make all the difference in your finished microgreen garden.
There are many people who choose to buy microgreen seeds from a garden retailer. While these can be good for those who live in areas that get a decent amount of sunlight, they may not necessarily be ideal for those of us who live in regions that do not get as much sunshine. Blue chip seeds, for instance, will do well in areas where there is a regular stream of sunlight, though you may want to consider planting them in an area that gets less sunlight over a given period. Sunlight is also important because micro green plants thrive best when they are given just the right amount of food to encourage their growth.
For those of us who live in temperate areas, it can sometimes be difficult to get enough sunlight. If you live in an area where you have to choose between growing microgreens properly and getting too much sun, you may find it worth your while to purchase microgreen seeds from a nursery or seed store rather than buying them directly from a retailer. Most reputable nurseries and seed stores will guarantee that they have what you are looking for. They can also tell you how to avoid wasting your money by trying to save a few cents. Many micro green seeds are priced affordably, and if you know where to look, you can find quality seeds for cheap.
If you are planning on growing micro green plants in pots or containers, make sure you prepare the soil properly. Ponds or containers must be made with soil that has been enriched with compost. This fertilizer should come from a garden center, a local organic garden supply store, or your nursery. Try to stick with low-cost fertilizers, as some fertilizers can build up in the soil and Leach harmful chemicals into the water table when they are used improperly.
Once you have gotten a microgreen seed, you will need to get a microgreen drop seeder. A microgreen drop seeder will allow you to keep a continuous supply of microgreen seeds on hand so that you will always have some variety available to plant. There are a number of different types of drop seeder on the market, including some that are made specifically for keeping only one type of micro green. If you are growing microgreens that tend to change color, you may need two separate drop bins, one for each type of micro green.
When you first plant your seeds, they will need to be watered. However, you do not have to do this immediately. Keep your seeds out of direct sunlight, and if you live in a dry, warm area, don’t over-water them. You should empty the water container before it fills with water, but you should also empty the soil container about a week or so before you plant your seeds. When you plant your seeds, there is no need to water them at all.
You can expect your seeds to germinate in about three weeks. Make sure you keep an eye on them and make sure they are getting enough light and water. You can expect the seeds to sprout about six inches after your first planting. Microgreen seeds are tiny, so keep that in mind when you are planning your garden and the types of plants you will grow.
Each plant will need to have its own container for growing. These are usually large pots, with approximately four to twelve inches of depth. You will not have a consistent amount of space for each plant, but most seed packets should tell you how much room your plants will need. Keep in mind that your microgreen seeds will germinate in about three weeks, so keep your plants relatively close together.
