Starting a small garden is not very difficult. Just choose some vegetables and go from there. You can even add more vegetables to your apartment garden if you’re still getting the most out of your little garden. Also, keep in mind that growing a small apartment garden shouldn’t be all that hard. If you’re still struggling with your apartment gardening and want to add more plants, you may add more vegetables to the garden as well. But, no matter what size your apartment garden, keep the following things in mind.
Only Grow What You Need – This is important because you don’t want to overpopulate your apartment garden with too much of everything. Too many plants will make your apartment seem overcrowded and give your garden a cluttered appearance. So, choose only a couple types of plants to start with. Also, keep in mind that smaller grows tend to be more fragrant so it may take some time to get used to having plants around. Choose what you like and go from there.
Sunlight is Important – While plants do require sunlight in order for them to grow, certain types of plants need more than others. For example, mint needs more sunlight than most other plants. So, while plant A may get four hours of sunlight every day, plant B might need five hours. Also, mint will dry out more quickly if you don’t provide it with extra sunlight during the hottest part of the day. Make sure you know the requirements of each plant and plan accordingly.
Choose containers – There are plenty of containers available to help you get started gardening. There are big beautiful baskets available in all sizes and shapes. There are small ones that are great for storing soil and plants as well. There are also cute, simple plastic or glass pots that are perfect for starting a garden. However, there are also a number of other choices as well, including natural stone, terracotta clay, recycled soda canisters and old milk jugs. You can find whatever you need to follow these simple gardening tips and pick the right containers.
Healthy Soil – One of the biggest challenges for new gardeners is how to start a small garden with poor soil. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that difficult. All you have to do is make sure the soil has enough moisture to hold the plants in and that it isn’t compacted enough. Once you do this, planting your seeds just takes a matter of minutes and you’re off. There are plenty of other gardening tips and tricks that will help when it comes to planting soil, but if you’re not careful, your soil could end up being a problem because it’s too wet or too dry.
Garden Gift – Probably the easiest and most fun way to plant is by getting a nice container full of topsoil from a local nursery and making your own mix. Start out with about one inch of topsoil in the bottom of the containers and then add some fertilizer. Mix in well with the soil until you reach about an inch of organic material in the middle. This will be good enough to start planting in your balcony garden.
Gardening Gift – One of the most popular gardening gifts for beginner gardeners are planters. Not only are planters colorful and nice looking, but they provide lots of useful tools and items that beginner gardeners will use. A square planter will allow you to plant two rows of plants at a time and have room for hand tools as well. If you have limited space or live in a small apartment, however, there are other smaller and more efficient planters that won’t take up as much room or cost as much money.
Start Early – Even though many people want to get started in the spring, starting a garden in the winter can help you save money on gardening equipment, seeds and even help preserve food stocks. One of the most important things to remember for a healthy garden is providing the proper amount of sunlight for vegetables. In order to give your vegetables the sunlight they need, start planting them about a foot away from the building that gets the most sunlight each day. It’s also helpful to place the pots on a potting bench so that the sunlight can hit them directly as well.
